Games from the past - Jade Cocoon

As today is monday, I thought I would do a little post about a game from the past that I love. The game in question is Jade Cocoon: Story of the Tamamayu. I remember first playing this game first on a demo disc, then purchasing it one day after begging my parents to buy it for me. It does hold a lot of nostalgia for me as I did play it alot as a kid.

The main story revolves around the main protagonist Levant, a young cocoon master, and his journey through different realms to save his wife and town from a horde of demons. He must travel deep into the forest and capture and train various monsters (kinda like pokemon a bit) to accompany him on his journey. The overall story of this game is a great one as it does thicken and get more interesting as time goes on and does delve into the lore of this magical world. Another great thing about this game is that it was developed in collaboration with Katsuya Kondo, who was the character designer at Studio Ghibli.

Where this game really shines is its combat system, The player can choose to fight various enemies by themselves or with one of their own captured minions that they have trained. This is a basic concept yes, but its very cool and works incredibly well, another great addition is the ability to combine two minions that you have captured making them a mix of the two base minions. It really does lead to some great customization and having minions that you really connect with. The music in this game is also amazing, in my opinion this games music is second in my all time top game soundtracks (behind MGS), As I write this I am listening to the soundtrack, The soundtrack just fits the game so well and every different stage just gels so well with the environment that you are in, one memorable part of the soundtrack is the dream sequence, its haunting and is just perfect for that moment in time.

While the game is amazing and I love it to bits there are a few things that could have been improved, first off the game is a bit too short for my liking and does not establish the characters (which there are few of) very well, I would have loved for the devs to have made more characters that each had there own little interwinding stories to further help the main plot progress, while leaving it with only about 15-20 characters, its a bit bland. Another thing is the ending, while I wont spoil anything I feel this games ending is a bit rubbish, there's no real eureka moment ort anything that makes you feel completed, its sad, for a game that had so much potential it just falls short right at the last hurdle. One last thing that I don't like is that once you finish the main story you enter a place known as 'The Eternal Corridor' while this place is fun and allows you to keep playing and training yuour minions. You can literally only do this, and once you've entered this place you can get out. your stuck, no exploring the outside world again. You just have to stay in this place, which sucks.

All in all a great game with some problems but definitely one you should play if you are a fan of RPG's, One day I would love to see  a HD remake of this game!! I would give this game a 7/10 as I feel the problems with the ending just pit it out of an 8. I'm thinking of doing a live stream or a lets play of this game soon, so keep checking my twitter for any updates and come and watch me play (horribly) this brilliant game!!
